The 29-year-old Richmond woman known as Kash had built an audience through digital reality programs before her death Sunday.
OAKLAND, Calif. — Mackayla Paige, a 29-year-old reality performer known to viewers as Kash, was fatally shot early Sunday in downtown Oakland, turning a homicide investigation into a story followed by an online audience familiar with her appearances on digital television programs.
Oakland police said officers responded shortly after 1:30 a.m. to the 200 block of 14th Street following a report of a shooting. They found a 29-year-old Richmond woman with at least one gunshot wound. She was taken to a hospital after lifesaving efforts at the scene but later died. Paige was subsequently identified as the victim in reports about the shooting.
Paige had appeared on digital reality programming including “Real West Coast Baddies” and was known publicly by the name Kash. Her work placed her within a growing corner of entertainment built around streaming programs and social media personalities rather than traditional broadcast television. News of her death prompted tributes and discussion among viewers and others familiar with her online presence.
Police, however, have released considerably less information about the circumstances of Paige’s final hours than has circulated online. Investigators have not announced a motive or confirmed social media claims about what happened before the shooting. They also have not said whether Paige knew the woman who was taken into custody.
Authorities said the person arrested in connection with the killing is also a woman from Richmond. Her name had not been released as of Monday morning. Police also had not publicly specified potential charges, described the evidence supporting the arrest or provided a detailed account of the events that led to the shooting.
The gap between the limited official information and Paige’s public profile has fueled widespread interest in the case. Reports of her death spread quickly among entertainment and social media outlets, while unverified accounts of the shooting also circulated. Police have not endorsed those accounts, and the exact sequence of events remains part of the homicide investigation.
Paige’s death comes as digital entertainment personalities increasingly build sizable audiences outside traditional television networks. In Paige’s case, that public identity made her death recognizable to viewers who knew her as Kash even as Oakland authorities initially described the victim only as a 29-year-old Richmond woman.
Investigators have asked members of the public to provide information as well as photographs or video that may document what happened around the time of the shooting. Police have not publicly said whether surveillance footage, witness accounts or other evidence has established what caused the encounter.
The investigation remains active. The woman arrested has not been publicly identified, and an arrest does not establish guilt. Police had not announced a motive, described the relationship between the two women or provided a final account of the circumstances surrounding Paige’s death.
