Three Dead in Marin Home as Former Officer Emerges as Suspect

Two retired SFPD members were reported among three people found dead inside a Strawberry home after a Sunday evening 911 call.

STRAWBERRY, Calif. — An investigation into three deaths inside a Marin County home has reached into the ranks of the San Francisco Police Department, with two retired members of the agency reported among those found dead after gunfire was reported Sunday evening.

Bay Area news organizations identified the retired officers as Kevin Mannix, a former SFPD sergeant, and Ann Mannix, a former deputy chief. The Marin County Sheriff’s Office had not formally released the identities early Monday, but San Francisco police leadership informed department personnel of the deaths, according to reporting based on an internal department message.

The connection to SFPD adds another dimension to an investigation that began shortly after 5 p.m. Sunday on Strawberry Circle in the unincorporated community of Strawberry. Marin County deputies responded after a 911 call reporting gunfire at a residence. A person who had been inside was able to leave the property, and deputies subsequently found three people dead inside the home.

ABC7 reported, citing sources familiar with the case, that Kevin Mannix was suspected of shooting Ann Mannix and their adult daughter before dying by suicide. Other local reports carried similar accounts. The Marin County Sheriff’s Office had not publicly confirmed that sequence early Monday, and officials said the circumstances and relationships among the dead remained part of the active investigation.

Ann Mannix had risen through the San Francisco Police Department into its senior command staff. Official department records show she was promoted to deputy chief of the Field Operations Bureau in November 2018. In 2019, she was assigned to lead the Special Operations Bureau as a deputy chief. Local reporting has also described her as a groundbreaking member of the department’s tactical ranks before she moved into senior leadership.

Kevin Mannix served the same department and retired as a sergeant in 2018. Local reports said he and Ann Mannix lived at the Strawberry Circle property where the deaths occurred. Authorities had not publicly detailed the couple’s current relationship or disclosed what investigators believe preceded the gunfire.

The third person found dead was reported to be the couple’s adult daughter. News reports differed on whether she was 24 or 25, and the Sheriff’s Office had not released her identity or age early Monday. Investigators had also not announced a motive, released autopsy findings or described physical evidence recovered from the residence.

The deaths prompted a response inside SFPD as news circulated Sunday night. Police Chief Derrick Lew informed personnel of the deaths of Kevin and Ann Mannix in a department-wide message, according to local reporting. The message acknowledged the loss of the two former department members and directed employees affected by the news toward internal support resources.

In Marin County, deputies continued processing the Strawberry Circle scene into the night. Sheriff’s Office spokesperson Miguel Almaguer said investigators were working to establish who the three people were, how they were connected and what happened inside the residence. Authorities said there was no known threat to the surrounding community.

The investigation remains with Marin County authorities, who have not issued a final account of the deaths. Formal identification, the manner and cause of each death and any conclusion about the sequence of the shooting remain subject to the continuing sheriff’s and coroner investigation.
