Deadly Indianapolis Stabbing Leaves Two Parents Dead, Son Detained

Police say a specialized team had previously contacted the detained man over mental health concerns at the Lakeshire Lane home.

INDIANAPOLIS — A police crisis-response team had previously been called to the north side home where two people were fatally stabbed Sunday, adding a new element to the investigation as authorities examine what happened before the deaths.

The Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department said its Mobile Crisis Assistance Team had previously responded to the Lakeshire Lane home and had contact with David White over mental health concerns. White was detained Sunday after a man and woman, whom investigators believe were his parents, suffered fatal stab wounds. Police have not said when the earlier crisis response occurred or disclosed the circumstances that led to it.

Officers were dispatched to the 2800 block of Lakeshire Lane, near West 96th Street and Township Line Road, at about 12:22 p.m. Oct. 11. Police found an adult woman and an adult man with stab wounds. The woman died at the scene, while the man was taken to a hospital in critical condition and later died.

White was detained at the home without incident, police said. IMPD identified him Monday as the man investigators believe is the victims’ son. The victims had not been publicly identified by authorities as of Monday morning, and police had not announced criminal charges against White.

IMPD spokesperson Tommy Thompson said investigators believed the deaths may have involved a mental health episode. That assessment remained part of the police investigation, and authorities had not released a detailed explanation of what led to the attack or established a publicly confirmed motive.

The department’s Mobile Crisis Assistance Team works with Eskenazi Health as part of the city’s response to behavioral health emergencies. Police have not disclosed what happened during the team’s earlier contact at the Lakeshire Lane home, whether White received treatment or other services, or whether officers had made additional visits to the property.

The limited information leaves important questions unanswered about the earlier intervention and Sunday’s events. A prior mental health contact by itself does not establish why the stabbing occurred, and police have not released records connecting the earlier response to a specific cause of the deaths.

City-County Councilor Leroy Robinson expressed condolences to the family and neighborhood after the killings and called for attention to how people facing serious mental health challenges and their families receive help. Police continued investigating the deaths and had not announced further findings about the earlier crisis-team contact.
