Cincinnati homicide detectives are investigating after three young men were found in a crashed car near the Norwood Lateral.
CINCINNATI, Ohio — A 19-year-old man was killed and two other young men were injured after a reported shooting and crash on northbound Interstate 71 near the Norwood Lateral late Saturday, Cincinnati police said.
Police identified the man who died as Amarion Waver, 19. Officers responding to a reported shooting around 11 p.m. found a Nissan Altima that had been involved in a crash near the 8.0 mile marker. Three people were inside the vehicle, according to police. Waver was pronounced dead at the scene. The circumstances that led to the shooting and crash remained under investigation.
An 18-year-old man was found with life-threatening injuries that included a gunshot wound, police said. A second 19-year-old man had injuries that were described as not life-threatening. Both were taken to University of Cincinnati Medical Center for treatment. Authorities had not publicly identified either injured man as of Sunday.
Cincinnati police did not immediately disclose where Waver or the injured men were seated in the Altima, who was driving or whether investigators believe gunfire occurred before, during or after the events that led to the crash. Police also had not announced a suspect or publicly described a suspect vehicle.
The Homicide Unit is handling the investigation. Police have not released a possible motive or said whether the shooting was believed to be targeted or random. Investigators also had not publicly described how many shots were fired or whether a weapon had been recovered.
The incident forced authorities to close northbound I-71 while police, emergency crews and investigators worked at the scene. The closure lasted for several hours and caused a lengthy backup through the overnight period before the highway reopened Sunday morning.
The scene drew Cincinnati police crime scene personnel and transportation crews as investigators worked along the interstate. The prolonged closure reflected both the crash response and the need to preserve and examine a scene connected to a fatal shooting investigation.
Police accounts released Sunday established that officers were initially sent to investigate a reported shooting and then found the crashed Altima with three occupants. Authorities had not provided a more detailed sequence explaining how the gunfire and crash were connected, leaving a central part of the case unresolved.
The investigation remained active as detectives sought information about what happened on I-71. Police had not announced an arrest or released additional details about a possible suspect by Sunday evening.
