Man charged in Houston double murder

HOUSTON, TX – A Houston man is in jail, accused of a double murder that left a family grieving. Yamil Rivera Perez, 34, faces capital murder charges, with his bond set at $750,000. The charges stem from the fatal shooting of 29-year-old Alejandro “AJ” Suarez and Charity Freeman on January 20.

Authorities say Rivera Perez forced his way into a home on Riverwood Drive, armed with a gun. Suarez, who was visiting Freeman, was killed on the spot, while Freeman was rushed to a nearby urgent care, where she later died.

For Suarez’s sister, Alma, the loss is devastating. She described her brother as being caught in an unfortunate situation, emphasizing that such violence can strike anyone. “He was just in the wrong place at the wrong time,” she lamented, highlighting the randomness of the tragedy.

The suspect, Rivera Perez, reportedly ended a relationship with Freeman weeks before the incident. While the motive remains unclear, the case underscores the tragic consequences of domestic disputes turning violent.

Alma Suarez attended the initial court hearing, where she saw Rivera Perez for the first time. The encounter left her emotionally shaken, yet she remains committed to attending future court dates to honor her brother’s memory and seek justice.

The next hearing is set for March 25. Alma plans to be present, determined to see the legal process through and find some semblance of closure for her family. The case is a stark reminder of the pervasive issues of domestic violence and gun violence affecting communities.

As the investigation continues, the families involved face the difficult task of moving forward. The community, too, is left to reflect on the impact of such senseless violence and the urgent need for solutions.
