The body was reported Wednesday morning on Vogt Avenue in southwest Louisville.
LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Louisville Metro Police opened a death investigation Wednesday after a woman’s body was found in a dumpster on Vogt Avenue, authorities said.
Officers were called about 6:05 a.m. to the 3400 block of Vogt Avenue after a report that a body had been found. Police said the woman was dead when officers arrived. Her name had not been released, and investigators said the Jefferson County Coroner’s Office would determine her cause and manner of death.
The Louisville Metro Police Department’s Homicide Unit was assigned to the case. Police said that step is standard in unattended death cases and does not mean the death has been ruled a homicide. A police spokesperson said there were no obvious signs of foul play at the scene, but the investigation remained open Wednesday.
Authorities released few details about how the woman came to be in the dumpster or who first found her. Police did not announce an arrest, suspect description or public threat tied to the case. Investigators also had not said how long the woman may have been there before officers were called.
The discovery brought police and investigators to a section of southwest Louisville early in the morning as residents and workers began the day. The 3400 block of Vogt Avenue sits in a mixed area of homes, businesses and industrial sites, where trash containers and service routes are common.
The coroner’s findings will be central to the next stage of the case. Those findings could determine whether the death remains an unattended death investigation or moves in another direction. Police said the woman’s identity would be released after proper notification and review by the coroner’s office.
As of Thursday, no cause of death had been announced, and police had not reported any obvious trauma. The case remained under review by Louisville Metro Police and the Jefferson County Coroner’s Office.
