Authorities say Jerrell Clark fled after gunfire at Brooks Crossings Apartments.
RIVERDALE, Ga. — Police searched this week for Jerrell Clark, a man accused of shooting his pregnant girlfriend Saturday morning during a domestic dispute at Brooks Crossings Apartments in Riverdale.
Riverdale police said the woman survived and was hospitalized in stable condition. Officials said her unborn child showed no signs of fetal distress after the shooting. Clark remained wanted after officers cleared the apartment and determined he had left the scene.
Police Chief Randall Norman said the case began as a verbal fight between Clark and his long-term girlfriend. The argument turned physical inside the apartment before Clark allegedly pulled a gun from a closet and opened fire. Norman said the woman was shot in the neck and shoulder. Her teenage son then grabbed another gun and exchanged shots with Clark while trying to defend his mother.
Officers were called to the 8000 block of Taylor Road after reports of a person shot. Police blocked off the area because they believed an armed suspect might still be inside. Nearby residents were evacuated as officers waited for a tactical team. Investigators later used drone technology to check the home and found Clark was no longer there.
Authorities described Clark as 5 feet, 11 inches tall and about 150 pounds, with brown eyes. Police said he should be considered armed and dangerous. The woman’s name and her son’s name have not been released. Investigators also have not said where Clark may have gone after leaving the apartment complex.
Police said they were seeking charges including aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, battery against a pregnant woman, reckless conduct and cruelty to children. The case remained active as officers continued looking for Clark and reviewed evidence from the apartment.
Norman said the shooting showed how quickly a domestic dispute can become deadly. Residents near the complex described a tense scene as police closed off the area and moved people away from nearby units. No additional injuries were reported by police.
Clark remained at large as of Thursday, June 25. Riverdale police said the next step is finding and arresting him so the case can move into court.
