The coroner named a Soledad woman and King City man killed in Monday night’s shooting.
GREENFIELD, Calif. — Authorities have identified two South Monterey County residents killed in a late-night shooting at a Greenfield gas station as police investigate whether the attack was targeted.
Elizabeth Saavedra, 32, of Soledad, and Aldo Juan Manjujano, 26, of King City, died after gunfire broke out Monday at the Fastrip Gas Station at 145 El Camino Real. Their names were released Tuesday by the Monterey County Sheriff’s Coroner Office, while Greenfield police continued to lead the homicide investigation.
The shooting was reported about 10:50 p.m. June 22. Greenfield police said an officer reached the scene less than one minute after the first 911 call. Detectives were called in soon after and began collecting evidence from the gas station, nearby cameras and possible witnesses. The department said it was looking for several people who were present when the shooting happened.
Officials have released few details about the moments before the gunfire. Police have not said whether Saavedra and Manjujano were targeted by name, whether they were in a vehicle or how many people fired shots. KSBW reported, citing law enforcement sources, that the shooting was being investigated as a suspected gang-related retaliation ambush. Greenfield police had not publicly confirmed that account by Wednesday.
The investigation now depends heavily on video. Police said detectives are reviewing gas station surveillance, city surveillance and Flock camera data. The department said those systems have helped move the case forward and produced significant leads. Still, investigators said video may not show everything that happened, making witness accounts important to the case.
The Sheriff’s Coroner Office said it released the victims’ identities at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday and extended condolences to their families. The agency listed the case as tied to a double homicide in Greenfield and said questions about the circumstances should be handled by Greenfield police. No suspect names, arrest records or charging documents had been released as of Wednesday.
The killing took place in Greenfield, a Salinas Valley city between Soledad and King City. The case quickly became a regional investigation because the victims came from different nearby communities. Police said there was no known ongoing threat to the public, but they continued to treat the case as active and asked anyone with direct information from the scene to speak with investigators.
As of Wednesday, June 24, the deaths of Saavedra and Manjujano remained under investigation. The next public milestone is expected to be an update from Greenfield police if detectives identify suspects, make arrests or release more findings from the video review.
