Apparent Double Murder-Suicide Leaves Three Women Dead In Philly

Police recovered a gun and said no motive had been released.

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. — A South Philadelphia neighborhood was shaken Monday evening after three women were found dead inside a home in what police described as an apparent double murder and suicide.

Officers were called around 5:30 p.m. to the 2800 block of South 10th Street for a reported shooting inside a residence. Police said the women were found with gunshot wounds to the head and were pronounced dead at 5:38 p.m.

Police said the preliminary investigation indicates one woman shot two others before turning the gun on herself. A firearm was found at the scene. Officials had not identified the women Tuesday afternoon, though police said they were believed to be 67, 56 and 18 years old.

The deaths drew neighbors and relatives to the block as rain fell over the area Monday night. Investigators remained focused on the home near 10th and Johnson streets while the homicide unit began piecing together what happened before officers arrived.

JoAnna Schofield, who lives nearby, said the violence stunned the block. “You just don’t hear about things like that in this neighborhood,” Schofield said. “It’s just a very quiet, nice neighborhood.”

Authorities had not said whether the women lived together, how they knew one another or whether anyone else was inside the home at the time of the shooting. Police also had not released a motive.

The next steps include formal identification of the victims, family notifications and continued review of physical evidence from the home. Police said the homicide unit is leading the investigation.

As of Tuesday, June 23, no further details had been released, and the shooting remained an active police investigation.
