Police said the victim was taken to a hospital after gunfire was reported Wednesday afternoon.
OAKLAND, Calif. — A man in his 30s died Wednesday after a shooting in downtown Oakland, where officers responded around 3 p.m. to the 550 block of 17th Street after reports of gunfire, police said.
Oakland police said officers found the man suffering from at least one gunshot wound and had him taken to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead. His name was not released Wednesday because authorities were still working to notify his family.
The shooting drew a homicide investigation to a downtown block near offices, businesses and civic buildings. Police did not announce an arrest, name a suspect or release a motive in the hours after the shooting. Investigators also did not say whether the gunfire followed an argument, a robbery or another event.
Police said the department’s Homicide Division is handling the case. Detectives were expected to review reports from officers who first reached the scene, collect physical evidence and look for any nearby video that may show what happened before and after the gunfire.
The death adds to Oakland’s ongoing gun violence investigations in a year when police have continued to respond to shootings across several neighborhoods. Wednesday’s case stood out because it unfolded in the city’s downtown core during the afternoon, when people were moving through the area for work, errands and transit.
Authorities said the victim was a man in his 30s, but no other details about him were immediately made public. Police had not released information about whether he lived in Oakland or whether detectives believed he was targeted.
The case remained open Thursday, with investigators still working to determine who fired the shots and why. Police said the victim’s identity would be released after his next of kin is notified.
