The suspect is accused of killing a coworker after an argument at a city worksite.
LAS VEGAS, Nev. — A 31-year-old Las Vegas city employee made his first court appearance Saturday after police said he fatally shot a coworker inside a downtown office following a fight at work.
Brysen Kim faces an open murder charge with a deadly weapon in the death of a male coworker, police said. The shooting happened Friday morning at a workplace in the 400 block of North 7th Street. Both men were city maintenance workers assigned to the public works department.
The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department said dispatchers received a 911 call at about 6 a.m. from Kim, who reported that he had shot his coworker. Patrol officers found Kim still at the location and took him into custody. Inside the office, officers found the victim on the floor with a gunshot wound and began aid before medical crews arrived.
The victim was pronounced dead at the scene. Homicide investigators said Kim and the victim had been in a dispute for some time, but police have not released the reason for it. Lt. Robert Price said the argument became physical Friday before Kim produced a firearm and shot the other worker.
City officials said the shooting was being handled by Metro police and that the city was providing information to investigators. City Manager Mike Janssen told employees the loss of life was tragic and said workplace safety remained a top concern as the investigation continued.
The shooting prompted a police response that shut down part of 7th Street between Stewart and Bonanza during the morning investigation. Detectives processed the office scene, and the roadway reopened around noon. Police said the coroner’s office would release the victim’s identity after notification of relatives.
Kim remained in the Clark County Detention Center after his arrest. His next court proceeding was set for 8 a.m. June 16, when the case is expected to return before a Las Vegas Justice Court judge.
