Houston Burglary Call Ends With Suspect Shot Dead Over Fence

Houston police said a second suspect remained at large after the Friday shooting.

HOUSTON, Texas — A suspected burglar was shot and killed Friday afternoon in Alief after two brothers followed two people accused of breaking into a neighbor’s home, Houston police said.

The shooting happened around 1 p.m. on Cinnabar Drive near High Star Drive, after police said the suspects had returned to a home they were accused of trying to enter earlier the same day. One suspect died, and police said another escaped.

Investigators said the first call began on Bandlon Drive, where two people allegedly tried to break into a home and left before officers arrived. Hours later, the homeowner saw the suspects return on surveillance video and called a neighbor, Houston police Lt. Larry Crowson said. “He called his neighbor and said, ‘Hey, there’s somebody breaking into his house,’” Crowson said. The neighbor got his brother, and the two went outside to confront the suspects.

Police said the brothers followed the two suspects in a vehicle to the end of Cinnabar Drive. A confrontation followed. Crowson said one suspect was shot, jumped over a fence and was later found dead on the other side. Police had not released the dead man’s name, the names of the brothers or a detailed description of the second suspect by Friday night.

A witness recorded cellphone video showing two men near a vehicle after the chase, with one appearing to hold a gun. Rambelto Medrano, who identified the men as his sons, said he was not home when the shooting happened. “He called me when everything was going on with the two people,” Medrano said. “I tried to call them and nobody answers.”

Police said the brothers had not been charged as of Friday night. The case is expected to be presented to a grand jury, which would review evidence and decide whether any criminal charge is warranted. Investigators had not said what the suspects were trying to steal from the home.

The search for the second suspect continued Friday night. Police said the investigation remained open, with the grand jury review expected after detectives finish gathering statements and evidence.
