Authorities said both women were walking when trees came down Thursday night.
MONTGOMERY COUNTY, Md. — Two women died in separate falling-tree incidents Thursday night as storms swept through parts of Maryland, striking one woman on a park trail and another in a Prince George’s County neighborhood.
The deaths drew responses from police, fire crews and park officers in two counties. One woman was found on Matthew Henson Trail in Montgomery County. The other was struck in the 11700 block of North Marlton Avenue in Upper Marlboro, authorities said.
Montgomery County Fire and Rescue crews were called about 9 p.m. Thursday after a report that a woman was trapped beneath a fallen tree on Matthew Henson Trail. Maryland-National Capital Park Police said the woman had been walking when the tree fell and struck her. She died from her injuries at the scene, officials said.
Minutes earlier, Prince George’s County police said, a tree fell on a woman walking along North Marlton Avenue in Upper Marlboro. The call was reported about 8:40 p.m. She was pronounced dead. Police did not release her name Friday, and officials did not say whether anyone else was nearby when the tree came down.
The Montgomery County death happened along a trail tied to Matthew Henson State Park, near Georgia Avenue. Emergency crews searched the area after a caller reported the trapped woman. Park police said their officers responded with fire and rescue personnel and are handling the investigation into that death.
Storms were moving through the region when both incidents were reported. Local reports described downed trees and power lines across parts of the Washington area. Authorities had not released full weather findings Friday, and officials had not said whether the same storm cell caused both fatal tree falls.
Neither police agency announced charges Friday. No public hearing or formal review date had been listed. Investigators were expected to continue documenting the scenes, reviewing emergency calls and confirming the victims’ identities before releasing more information.
Officials released condolences but few personal details. “Our thoughts and condolences are with the victim’s family, friends, and loved ones during this difficult time,” Maryland-National Capital Park Police said in a statement about the Montgomery County death.
By Friday afternoon, authorities had confirmed two deaths, two separate scenes and no released victim names. More details were expected after families were notified and investigators completed their initial reviews.
