Dallas Woman Accused Of Shooting Ex-Husband 18 Times

Investigators said the March shooting followed a pizza delivery the victim never ordered.

DALLAS, Texas — A Dallas detective said vehicle taillights helped identify a woman accused of ambushing her ex-husband after a pizza delivery brought him outside his Redbird home.

Dallas police said Marquita Marie Rice, 31, was arrested May 26 in Wake County, North Carolina, nearly three months after the March 1 shooting on Sedona Lane. The victim survived after being shot 18 times. Rice is charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon involving family violence and is being held on a $1 million bond.

The case began shortly after a pizza delivery arrived at the home. Police said the victim did not place the order. Surveillance video showed a person in black hiding near a garage wall before the man came outside. Investigators said the shooter opened fire, left, then came back and fired more shots before fleeing in a Chevy Trax.

Detective Michael Bui said the video was grainy, but the vehicle’s rear lights gave investigators a lead. “I tracked down the car, and from that moment, the car revealed that it was rented out to Miss Rice,” Bui said. Police said Rice was the victim’s ex-wife. Bui said the vehicle had traveled from Georgia to Dallas and back, and also between Raleigh, Savannah and Dallas.

Police said Rice was taken into custody in Wake Forest, North Carolina, with help from local authorities and the U.S. Marshals Service. She later appeared in court in Wake County and refused extradition to Texas. Dallas authorities are now working to bring her back to face the charge tied to the shooting.

The attack drew attention because police said the pizza order appeared to be part of the plan. Investigators have not publicly identified the delivery driver as a suspect. They have not said whether the driver knew the order was connected to the shooting. Police also have not released the victim’s name.

Bui said he had not seen another case in which an ex-spouse was accused of using a fake delivery to set up a shooting. The investigation remains active, and police have said the evidence includes surveillance video, vehicle records and the timeline of Rice’s travel.

Rice remains jailed in North Carolina as the extradition case moves forward. Her next court appearance is scheduled for June 25.
