Midland Gunman Dies After Standoff; 1 Killed, 10 Injured

Officials said nine people were taken to Midland Memorial Hospital after the attack.

MIDLAND, Texas — Nine shooting victims were taken to Midland Memorial Hospital on Friday after a deadly attack in Midland that left one person dead and the suspected gunman deceased, officials said.

The hospital response became a central part of the emergency after gunfire was reported near West Wall Street. Mayor Lori Blong said 11 victims were counted in all. Four people were taken into surgery, five were listed as stable and some patients were later released.

City officials said police responded to the 4600 block of West Wall Street after reports of an active shooter. Officers heard gunfire from a building and began clearing the area. “Additional information will be released as it becomes available,” the city said while the response was still unfolding.

The shooting led to a lockdown at Midland Memorial Hospital as victims arrived and officers worked to secure the area. Officials set up a family reunification site for relatives seeking information. The emergency department remained secured while the main hospital later resumed broader operations.

Police said the suspect was barricaded for part of the morning, bringing SWAT officers, armored vehicles and partner agencies to the scene. City leaders said the standoff ended when the suspect was confirmed dead. Officials said drones and robots were used to check the area before police declared the immediate threat over.

Witness Andrea Mendias said she heard what sounded like a small explosion near a closed veterinary clinic and then heard many gunshots. She said heavily armed officers moved into the parking lot. Video from the scene showed police using armored vehicles and robots during the response.

The shooting renewed painful memories in the Midland and Odessa area, where a 2019 shooting rampage killed seven people and wounded more than 20 others. Friday’s attack happened in Midland, a city of about 140,000 people more than 300 miles west of Dallas and in the heart of the state’s oil region.

Authorities had not identified the victims or the suspect by Friday afternoon. They also had not released a motive. Police said the scene would remain active while investigators reviewed evidence, interviewed witnesses and worked to determine how the shooting began.

City officials said the active shooter incident was resolved, but roads near the scene remained closed. The next milestone will be the release of victim identifications and a fuller timeline from investigators.
