Teen Killed In Cerritos Shooting Near Shopping Center Restaurant

Authorities said the suspect fled on foot after an altercation outside a local business.

CERRITOS, Calif. — A juvenile male was shot and killed Saturday afternoon near a business on Gridley Road in Cerritos, where Los Angeles County sheriff’s homicide detectives are investigating an altercation that ended in gunfire.

Deputies responded about 4:01 p.m. June 13 to the 18600 block of Gridley Road, near Los Cerritos Center. The victim was treated at the scene by county fire paramedics and taken to a hospital, where he died. No arrest had been announced as of Sunday.

The Sheriff’s Department first reported the victim as an adult male, then corrected the report Saturday night and said he was a male juvenile. Investigators said the shooting happened outside a local business after a fight. During the altercation, the suspect shot the victim and ran away on foot, leaving the area before deputies arrived.

Television video showed patrol cars and crime scene tape near a Chick-fil-A in the shopping area. Several evidence markers were visible near the drive-thru lane, while investigators worked around vehicles stopped near the restaurant. Officials did not release the victim’s name, age, school or city of residence.

Authorities also did not release a suspect description or possible motive. The case is being handled by the Sheriff’s Department Homicide Bureau with help from the Cerritos Sheriff’s Station. Lt. Michael Modica was listed as the homicide bureau contact in the department’s notice.

The shooting drew a large law enforcement response to one of Cerritos’ busiest retail corridors, a shopping area used by families, workers and weekend visitors. The 18600 block of Gridley Road sits near Los Cerritos Center, where restaurants and stores bring steady traffic through the afternoon and evening.

Detectives said the investigation remains active. They are expected to review surveillance video, speak with witnesses and gather physical evidence from the scene. The Sheriff’s Department said there was no additional information to release Saturday night.

The case remained open Sunday, June 14, with no public suspect description and no announced arrest.
