Augusta woman killed by husband at Aiken gas station in murder-suicide

AIKEN, S.C. – A tragic murder-suicide took place outside a gas station here on Monday, leaving an Augusta couple dead, authorities reported.

According to Aiken Public Safety Capt. Marty Sawyer, 55-year-old George Britt shot his wife, 43-year-old Tiffany Britt, at the Murphy Express gas station on Richland Avenue where she worked. An off-duty deputy attempted to intervene during their argument but was unable to prevent the fatal gunfire.

Tiffany Britt was rushed to Aiken Regional Medical Centers, where she was pronounced dead, while George Britt died at the scene from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Both bodies are scheduled for autopsies in Newberry on Wednesday.

The deputy who tried to intervene suffered minor injuries during the confrontation, prompting the State Law Enforcement Division to launch an investigation.

Before the tragedy, George Britt had posted a cryptic message on his Facebook page professing his love for his wife and expressing his inability to live without her. A woman who preferred to remain anonymous revealed that Tiffany Britt had taken her in and raised her as her own child, showing generosity and kindness to others.

The couple’s tragic end has left the community in shock, with those who knew them describing them as amazing people. Authorities are urging anyone with information about the incident to contact the Aiken Department of Public Safety or submit an anonymous online tip.
