Neighbors said people ran for cover before two victims were stabbed Wednesday night.
HOUSTON, Texas — A southeast Houston neighborhood was shaken Wednesday night after police said a woman with a large knife chased several people, threatened a mother and child, and stabbed a married couple near an apartment complex.
The suspect, identified by police as Javon Latrece Alix, faces two aggravated assault with a deadly weapon charges. The attack sent a 69-year-old man and his 42-year-old wife to the hospital. Police said the incident happened near Broadway Street and Rockhill Street and appeared to involve strangers.
Investigators said the first reported confrontation happened near a convenience store, where a man was threatened but got away. Video from the scene showed people locking themselves inside as a woman with a knife approached. Police said the suspect later moved toward the apartment complex, where more residents were outside.
HPD Lt. R. Willkens said Alix then threatened a mother and her 7-year-old child, telling them she would stab them if they did not run. The mother and child escaped. Police said Alix then reached a group of four people and stabbed the married couple. The man was stabbed in the stomach and back, while his wife was stabbed in the stomach.
Witnesses described a rush to get neighbors indoors. Cornelius Clark said people were yelling for others to get inside as the woman ran toward them with the knife. “She started charging,” Clark said. Police said the attack ended after officers arrived and took Alix into custody. No officers were reported injured.
Authorities said they were reviewing whether Alix was in a medical or mental health crisis. Willkens said she told police she was on seizure medication, but investigators had not confirmed what role, if any, that played in the incident. Police did not release a motive and did not say the victims had any prior contact with Alix.
Court records show Alix was already on probation for assaulting a peace officer. Records also show past cases involving harassment of a public servant and evading arrest. The new charges are tied to the stabbing of the married couple, while police continued reviewing the earlier threats reported by witnesses.
By Friday, the case was moving through Harris County court while investigators gathered video and statements from people at the store and apartment complex. Police had not released the victims’ names, and their recovery remained the next key update in the case.
