SOMERVILLE, MA – A Brockton man driving for Lyft faced a Somerville court Monday after being charged with the assault and rape of a passenger. Luis Carlos Ramos Texera, 27, entered a not guilty plea to the serious allegations.
The courtroom scene was tense as Texera appeared handcuffed, separated by glass, to address accusations involving a violent act against a stranger. The alleged incident occurred after he picked up a woman in Boston, who had been out with friends.
According to court records, the woman summoned a Lyft at 2:30 a.m. after socializing at a bar. Her last memory was entering the vehicle, later waking to find herself in a distressing situation with her head resting on the driver’s lap. She discovered her bra was missing, and her pants were unzipped.
The woman managed to leave the vehicle on Canal Lane in Somerville, as Texera drove away. Authorities claim he had remained with her for over an hour. The victim reported minimal alcohol consumption that night and no strange interactions.
Following the ordeal, she received care at Cambridge Hospital. Police collaborated with Lyft to identify Texera, confirming his identity through his car and profile. He now confronts charges of rape and assault.
Texera has been detained without bail, pending a dangerousness hearing. Lyft has since banned him, denouncing the alleged actions and promising cooperation with the investigation.
This case raises questions about rider safety and the obligations of ride-sharing companies to protect their users. Lyft reiterated their dedication to a secure environment, offering assistance in the investigation.
As the legal proceedings unfold, the community is left contemplating the safety and trust issues surrounding ride-sharing services.
The situation underscores the need for ongoing discussions about safety protocols and accountability in the industry.
