Two Killed, Four Wounded As Gunfire Erupts In Paterson

Six people were taken to St. Joseph’s University Medical Center after the Sunday night shooting.

PATERSON, N.J. — Investigators searched Monday for the person who opened fire on a group of people in Paterson, killing two men and injuring four others near Rosa Parks Boulevard and Godwin Avenue.

The shooting happened Sunday night in a busy part of the city. Authorities said police responded at about 8:26 p.m. and found six people wounded. All were taken to St. Joseph’s University Medical Center, where two men, ages 43 and 29, were pronounced dead.

The four surviving victims were listed in stable condition, according to authorities. Officials said all of the known victims were Paterson residents. A seventh person reportedly left the area on their own, though officials did not immediately describe that person’s condition or role in the case.

Police had not announced an arrest by Monday afternoon. Authorities also had not released the victims’ names, a suspect description or a possible motive. WABC reported that police marked dozens of pieces of evidence at the intersection, including shell casings.

Video from the scene showed people on the ground as officers moved through the area after the gunfire. A person could be heard yelling for help. Councilman Alex Mendez, who said he was nearby when the shots were fired, described the scene as frightening and chaotic.

News 12 reported that a witness heard about 12 gunshots and screaming after the shooting. The witness described confusion in the moments that followed, as emergency crews and police arrived near the intersection.

The shooting comes during a period of concern over gun violence in Paterson. News 12 reported that the city had another mass shooting in mid-April, when one person was killed and three others were wounded. Officials have not said whether the cases are related.

The Passaic County Prosecutor’s Office continued leading the investigation Monday. Detectives were expected to keep reviewing evidence from the intersection and statements from witnesses as they worked to determine what happened before the gunfire.
