Man Killed at Home While on FaceTime, Girlfriend Says

Shelby County investigators are reviewing a fatal shooting reported inside a Cordova residence.

CORDOVA, Tenn. — A FaceTime call is part of the investigation into the fatal shooting of a man inside a Cordova home, after his girlfriend said he was speaking with a friend when he was killed.

The Shelby County Sheriff’s Office is handling the homicide investigation. Officials have released limited information, but the reported call could give detectives a clearer account of the victim’s final moments and the timing of the shooting.

The man was found shot to death inside the home after deputies responded to the scene. His girlfriend told FOX13 Memphis that he had been on FaceTime with a friend when the shooting happened. Investigators have not publicly said what the friend saw or heard, or whether the call showed the shooter. The sheriff’s office also has not said whether the man was alone in the home before the gunfire or whether deputies recovered a weapon from the scene.

The case now turns on several basic questions. Authorities have not announced a motive, released a suspect description or said whether the victim was targeted. They also have not confirmed whether forced entry was found at the home. Detectives are expected to compare the girlfriend’s account with statements from the friend on FaceTime, emergency call records and any nearby surveillance video. Phone data could help establish when the call began, when it ended and who contacted authorities after the shooting.

Homicide investigations inside homes often depend on a mix of witness statements and forensic evidence. In Cordova, the private setting may make digital evidence especially important. Video doorbells, security cameras and phone records can help investigators track movement around a residence. In this case, the FaceTime detail stands out because it suggests someone outside the home may have had direct contact with the victim during the moments surrounding the shooting.

No arrest had been publicly reported as of May 10. Once investigators identify a suspect, the case could move to the Shelby County District Attorney General’s Office for review of possible charges. Before that happens, detectives must determine who fired the shot, how that person entered or approached the home and whether the killing followed an argument, robbery or another event. Officials have not said when they expect to release the victim’s name or additional evidence.

The girlfriend’s account has given the case a personal and unsettling detail: a routine video call that turned into a witness point in a homicide investigation. She described the victim as being in contact with a friend, not in the middle of a public dispute or confrontation. Authorities have not released the friend’s statement, but that person may help investigators narrow the timeline and identify sounds, voices or images from the call.

The case remains under investigation by the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office. No suspect, motive or arrest had been publicly announced by May 10.
