Police said the victim was trying to stop a fight between two women.
LOS ANGELES — A 26-year-old man was killed and another man was wounded Saturday evening when a dispute inside Red West Pizza in Wilmington ended in gunfire, Los Angeles police said.
The shooting was reported at 5:51 p.m. at the restaurant at 614 W. Pacific Coast Highway. Police said the violence began after two women got into a fight and the 26-year-old victim tried to break it up. A male suspect then opened fire, striking him and another man.
The 26-year-old man was pronounced dead after the shooting. A second man, described by officials as being in his early to mid-20s, was taken to a hospital with stable vital signs. Police had not released either victim’s name as of Monday.
An LAPD spokesman said the gunman fled on foot after the shooting. NBC Los Angeles reported that police later detained a possible suspect for questioning, but officials had not confirmed an arrest. Investigators have not said what led to the fight or whether the shooter knew either victim.
Police closed off the area near Pacific Coast Highway and Bay View Avenue as officers worked around the restaurant. LAPD issued an advisory about an hour after the shooting, saying an investigation was underway and asking people to avoid the area.
Video from the scene showed crime scene tape around the restaurant and officers examining the area outside the business. The shooting drew a large police response along a busy stretch of Wilmington, a Harbor Area neighborhood near the Port of Los Angeles.
The case remained under investigation Monday. Detectives were still working to identify the gunman, determine the motive and gather witness statements from people who were inside or near the restaurant.
