Girl Killed, Sister Critically Hurt In Flint Home Shooting

Police said more than 100 shots were fired into a home on Altoona Street.

FLINT, Mich. — A 9-year-old girl was killed and another girl was critically injured early Friday when gunfire struck a home in the 2500 block of Altoona Street, Flint police said.

The shooting brought a heavy response from Flint police, Flint Fire and Genesee County sheriff’s deputies after the call came in at 2:07 a.m. Officers found the younger girl dead at the scene. The second girl was taken to a local hospital in critical condition.

Police said the home was hit by dozens of bullets. Evidence markers at the scene appeared to reach 99 shell casings, but investigators said the number was higher because the markers ran out. Police said more than 100 shots were fired. No suspect had been identified as of Friday evening, and the case remained under investigation.

Flint City Councilwoman Tonya Burns said she met with the grieving family after the shooting. “This is tragic,” Burns said, describing the pain of parents who lost a 9-year-old child and were waiting for word on another daughter. She said the family was facing a loss that would follow them through every birthday, school year and family milestone the child would never reach.

Authorities did not release the children’s names. Police also had not announced a motive, the number of shooters or whether the home was targeted. Local reports differed on the age of the surviving girl, with one identifying her as 14 and another as 12. Officials had not publicly resolved that difference by the latest update.

The shooting happened in a residential area before sunrise, leaving investigators to sort through a large scene marked by shell casings and bullet damage. Burns said the number of rounds fired showed a deep disregard for anyone inside the house. “None of those 99 bullets have a name on them,” she said.

The investigation is now focused on identifying who fired into the home and why. Police asked anyone with information to contact Detective Perry at 810-237-6915 or submit an anonymous tip to Crime Stoppers at 1-800-422-JAIL. No arrests had been reported.

By Friday evening, one child was dead, another remained in critical condition and Flint police were still searching for a suspect in a shooting that left more questions than answers.
