Hillsborough County deputies detained two people within minutes of receiving an employee’s 911 call from the Brandon Exchange store.
BRANDON, Fla. — A man was found dead inside a fitting room at Dick’s House of Sport on Friday after an employee reported a shooting at the Brandon Exchange shopping center, according to the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office.
Deputies detained two people believed to have been involved, but the Sheriff’s Office had not announced arrests or criminal charges as of Sunday. Authorities also had not released the name of the man who died, the identities of the detained people or information about what led to the shooting.
The Sheriff’s Office said its 911 Dispatch Center received the employee’s call at 4:28 p.m. July 10. Deputies reached the store within four minutes and found the man dead in a fitting room. Two minutes after that discovery, deputies detained two people, the agency said.
Investigators said preliminary information showed that three people entered the sporting goods store together and went into the fitting room. Employees reported hearing a gunshot moments later. Surveillance video showed two members of the group leaving the store and running into the parking lot, according to the Sheriff’s Office.
The agency did not say whether a weapon had been recovered or identify which of the three people may have fired the shot. Officials also did not release details about any relationship among the three or whether investigators had determined a possible motive.
At least 33 deputies responded, including members of the Sheriff’s Office K-9 Unit. The response focused on securing the store, locating those believed to be involved and determining whether there was any continuing danger at the shopping center.
Sheriff Chad Chronister said deputies’ training helped them reach the scene, secure the area and detain those believed to be involved within minutes. “There is absolutely no tolerance for violence in Hillsborough County, especially in places where families gather to shop and spend time together,” Chronister said.
Chief Deputy Joseph Maurer briefed reporters from the scene Friday evening. The Sheriff’s Office classified the case as an active death investigation and said additional information would be released through its Public Affairs Office.
No further details about the man’s death, possible charges or the status of the two detained people had been announced by Sunday. Investigators had not said when another update would be provided.
