An 18-year-old died after four people were shot near apartments at Angier Avenue and Boulevard.
ATLANTA — Three people were recovering in a hospital after a Friday evening shooting near an Old Fourth Ward apartment complex left 18-year-old Jajuan McDowell dead, authorities said.
The surviving victims were identified only by age and gender. Police said they were two boys, ages 16 and 17, and a 23-year-old woman. Officials said they were in stable condition but did not release details about the nature of their injuries or expected recovery times.
Officers responded at about 5:20 p.m. to the area of Angier Avenue NE and Boulevard NE. Police secured several buildings around the apartment complex as investigators examined the scene and questioned people who were in the area.
All four people who were shot were taken to a hospital. McDowell was pronounced dead there. The Fulton County Medical Examiner later confirmed his identity, while the names of the surviving victims remained private.
Police said the shooting stemmed from a robbery. Authorities had not released further information about what led to the confrontation, whether the victims knew one another or whether the gunfire occurred inside or outside one of the apartment buildings.
Several people were detained during the early stages of the investigation. Police later said they found probable cause to charge D’keiman Carter, 17, and a 16-year-old boy in connection with the case.
Authorities said the teenagers are expected to face charges of murder, aggravated assault and possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony. Both were being held at the Grady Memorial Detention Center. Their alleged actions have not been tested in court.
Police have not said whether additional people are being investigated or whether more arrests could follow. No weapon information, surveillance findings or detailed timeline of the shooting had been publicly released.
Detectives continued working Sunday to determine what happened before the gunfire and clarify the relationships among the people involved. Further updates on the surviving victims’ conditions had not been announced.
