Man Detained After Fatal Shooting During Houston Fight

Police recovered a firearm after a fight outside an Odin Court home ended with one man dead.

HOUSTON — A man was detained after police said he fatally shot another man during a fight outside a southeast Houston home late Saturday.

Houston police responded around 11:10 p.m. to the 3700 block of Odin Court, near Texas Highway 288 and Old Spanish Trail, after a woman called 911 to report the shooting. Investigators said the two men had been fighting before one of them pulled a gun and shot the other in the chest.

Houston Fire Department paramedics performed CPR on the wounded man before taking him to a nearby hospital. The man, believed to be in his 30s, was pronounced dead at the hospital. Authorities had not released his identity Sunday morning.

Police detained the suspected shooter, described as a man in his 50s, at the scene. Investigators also recovered the firearm believed to have been used in the shooting. The man was later taken to a hospital in stable condition, police said.

Investigators said the suspected shooter is engaged to the mother of the victim’s girlfriend. Police did not say whether that family connection played a role in the confrontation or explain what caused the men to begin fighting.

A woman who witnessed the shooting was detained for questioning and was cooperating with investigators. Another woman who was inside the home told police that she heard the gunfire but did not see the shooting.

Police had not announced criminal charges or identified either man as of Sunday morning. Investigators were continuing to interview witnesses and examine the circumstances that led to the deadly encounter.
