Police detained several people for questioning after gunfire erupted outside an Atlanta apartment complex Friday afternoon.
ATLANTA, Ga. — An 18-year-old man died and three other people were wounded Friday after gunfire broke out outside an apartment complex in Atlanta’s Old Fourth Ward neighborhood, police said.
Atlanta Police Department officers responded at about 5:20 p.m. to reports of multiple people shot at 464 Boulevard NE, near Angier Avenue. Officers found four victims: boys ages 16 and 17, the 18-year-old man and a 23-year-old woman. Police said all four had apparent gunshot wounds.
The victims were taken to a hospital. Police said the two younger teenagers and the woman were in stable condition. The 18-year-old died despite efforts to save him. Authorities had not released his name as of Saturday, and they had not said whether he lived at the apartment complex.
The shooting began outside the complex, according to information police provided during an on-scene briefing reported by FOX 5 Atlanta. The wounded 18-year-old made it inside the building before collapsing. Police said some people ran from the area after the gunfire but were located a short distance away by responding officers.
Several people were detained for questioning, but investigators had not announced any arrests or criminal charges. Police cautioned that the people being questioned had not been formally identified as suspects. Authorities also recovered firearms during the response, according to FOX 5 Atlanta.
Homicide detectives were reviewing surveillance video supplied by the apartment complex’s management. The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives also responded to help process ballistic evidence. Police had not disclosed what the footage showed or whether any recovered firearm had been connected to a particular person.
Investigators had not determined what led to the shooting. Police had not said whether the victims knew the people who opened fire or whether the incident followed an argument or another confrontation. The department described the information released Friday night as preliminary and said details could change as investigators gathered more evidence.
The identities of the three surviving victims and the people detained for questioning also remained undisclosed. Police said detectives would continue examining evidence and consult prosecutors before any possible charges were filed.
The Atlanta Police Department said the homicide investigation remained active Saturday. No motive, arrests or charges had been announced.
