Sean Hubbard faces murder and weapons charges after police say Camariya Tidwell was shot outside her family’s home.
ROCK HILL, S.C. — A 19-year-old woman was killed late Saturday outside her family’s Mount Gallant Road home after relatives said the same house had been targeted earlier, police and family members said.
Camariya Tidwell died after officers responded around 11 p.m. May 16 to a report of gunfire at the home near the U.S. 21 Bypass. Police arrested 34-year-old Sean Hubbard and charged him with murder and possession of a weapon during the commission of a violent crime. Police also said he had an additional warrant tied to a shooting into the same home.
Tidwell’s mother, Shifarnia McCullough, said her daughter was not a person who looked for trouble. “She loved her family; she was there for everybody and didn’t ask for nothing in return,” McCullough said. “My baby was an angel.” The family said video from earlier Saturday showed a man walking into the yard in daylight and firing into the front door. Relatives said they called police after that incident and gave officers information about a suspect vehicle.
Rock Hill police Lt. Michael Chavis said officers canvassed the area and used the vehicle description as they searched for the suspect. Chavis said investigators identified a prior known address and asked the York County Sheriff’s Office to check there. The family later shared more video they said showed a man with a firearm moving through the yard around the time of the fatal shooting. Police have not said publicly what led up to the final gunfire or whether Tidwell was near the intended target.
The family said the fear at the home did not begin Saturday. McCullough said relatives had called police the Tuesday before, May 12, after someone shot at the home. Police said an investigator was assigned to that case, extra patrols were sent to the area and officers kept watch on the home. McCullough said she believes stronger action before Saturday night may have changed what happened to her daughter.
Hubbard was arrested after the fatal shooting and charged in connection with Tidwell’s death. Police said the additional warrant for discharging a firearm into a dwelling was linked to a separate shooting into the home. Earlier reports said no one was hurt in the daytime shooting. It was not immediately clear where Hubbard was arrested, what relationship he had to anyone at the home or what court dates will follow the first bond hearing.
McCullough said a niece recognized the man in the video as someone who had recently done work on her car. The mother described Tidwell as bright, humble and close to her family. “Innocent child, my daughter was bright,” McCullough said. “She had a future ahead of her.” Police said they follow up on calls and that the homicide investigation remains active.
Hubbard remained charged in the case as investigators continued reviewing video, witness statements and earlier calls tied to the Mount Gallant Road home.
