KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — In a tragic development stemming from a 2023 shooting that claimed the lives of a toddler and another individual, the young girl’s mother has been indicted on charges of first-degree murder and aggravated child neglect. A Monroe County grand jury delivered the charges, implicating Sophia Sloan, 26, and a group of five men in the grievous incident that unfolded in Sweetwater.
The five men—Nathaniel Kain McEwan, Francisco Lagunas Jr., Liu Huerta, Itzhui Huerta, and Malachi Franklin—face assorted legal challenges in connection with the fatal event. They previously faced several charges which have now been expanded to include first-degree murder and aggravated child abuse among others.
The unfortunate episode occurred on Feb. 14, 2023, when gunfire broke out in a residence located in the 600 block of Hawkins Road. The shoot-out resulted in the death of Sloan’s daughter, Alayna, and Lenning Huerta, who was also critically injured in the violence and later found dead.
Details from the sheriff’s documents reveal that Lenning Huerta, the brother to Liu and Itzhui Huerta, allegedly initiated the gunfire at the residence. The chaos led to young Alayna suffering a fatal gunshot wound to the head. Despite rushed medical interventions, Alayna succumbed to her injuries.
Investigators believe the actions of Lenning Huerta, who allegedly fired the first shots, implicate all five men in the broader scheme that led to the gunfire. They argue that these individuals created the circumstances that precipitated the tragic results, holding them criminally accountable.
In addition to facing charges of first-degree murder and aggravated child abuse, the group is also accused of two counts of felony murder, conspiracy to commit first-degree murder, three counts of attempted murder, attempted burglary, reckless endangerment, and possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony.
The community remains shaken by the violence that erupted in what many described as a typically peaceful area. Local authorities, while not providing specific details on the motive behind the attack, emphasize the severity and the planned nature of the incident as factors leading to the comprehensive indictment.
As the legal processes unfold, the charges against Sloan and the five men highlight the complex nature of assigning responsibility in cases involving multiple actors and tragic outcomes. The case continues to gather attention, with court proceedings expected to shed further light on the events that led to the untimely death of young Alayna.
This case serves as a poignant reminder of the devastating impacts of gun violence in communities and the intricate legal challenges that follow such incidents. As the community seeks closure, many hope for a resolution that brings justice to the young victim and prevents future tragedies of this nature.
