A murder charge followed a Friday night shooting near restaurants in the center of Cincinnati.
CINCINNATI, Ohio — A deadly shooting Friday night at Fountain Square left one man dead, one suspect jailed and renewed scrutiny on violence in one of downtown Cincinnati’s busiest public spaces.
Cincinnati police said officers were called to the square around 8:30 p.m. after reports of gunfire. The victim, later identified as 25-year-old Darius Wheeler, was taken to the University of Cincinnati Medical Center and pronounced dead. Police said 36-year-old Christopher Shipman was arrested soon afterward and charged with murder.
Investigators said the shooting followed a fight between Wheeler and Shipman near the Chipotle and CityBird restaurants. Detectives told the court the two men wrestled on the ground for the same handgun before three shots were fired. Bystander video showed officers running toward the restaurants immediately after the gunfire.
Shipman appeared Saturday in Hamilton County court, where Judge Nia Bratton denied bond. Detectives said the investigation was still early and that they were working to confirm what video showed from several angles. Prosecutors said in court that Shipman admitted to the shooting, while relatives said outside the courtroom that he was remorseful before surrendering.
The case adds to concern around Fountain Square, a central downtown gathering place surrounded by restaurants, offices and entertainment venues. Another shooting near CityBird in October injured two people. The charges in that case were later dismissed after a judge ruled the shooting was self-defense.
Police have not said what started Friday’s confrontation or released all evidence from the scene. The murder case now moves toward another hearing at 8:30 a.m. Wednesday. Until then, Shipman remains in the Hamilton County Justice Center, and investigators continue to review video, witness accounts and physical evidence.
