Yinchuan, China — A court in Yinchuan has handed down prison sentences to 15 individuals connected to a deadly explosion at a barbecue restaurant that claimed 31 lives and injured seven others. The sentencing, which took place on Friday at the Xingqing District People’s Court, ranges from one to six years for charges related to major liability accidents and the provision of fraudulent certification documents.
The tragic incident occurred on June 21, 2023, when a liquefied gas tank in the Fuyang barbecue restaurant leaked, leading to a catastrophic explosion. Among those sentenced are Zhang Hongxian and Liu Guo, the restaurant’s investors, as well as Cui Wenbo, the head of Ningxia Longjiang Clean Energy Co Ltd., and Zhou Zhiguo, who is associated with Ningxia Guohua Detection Technology Co Ltd.
In addition to prison time, three defendants will be barred from engaging in related fields for a designated period. Meanwhile, three frontline employees, who were deemed less culpable, received probation after meeting specific legal requirements.
The court established that the explosion stemmed from multiple regulatory violations committed by the companies involved. Issues from improper inspections to the handling of non-standard liquefied petroleum gas cylinders were cited, along with negligent operations that contributed to the gas leak and subsequent explosion.
Prosecutors argued that Zhang and 11 others disregarded essential safety protocols governing gas management, resulting in this catastrophic liability incident. The severe consequences of their negligence inflicted deep emotional and financial scars on the victims and their families.
The defendants, including Zhou and two others who worked for a liquefied gas safety inspection agency, intentionally submitted false documentation, aggravating the situation and leading to the additional charge of providing counterfeit certifications.
Throughout the proceedings, the court ensured that all defendants were afforded their legal rights and protections. Upon the conclusion of the sentencing, all individuals involved acknowledged their guilt and indicated they would forgo any appeals.
This case serves as a somber reminder of the critical importance of adherence to safety regulations in the handling of hazardous materials, and the potential consequences of lapses that can endanger lives.
