Boise, Idaho — A man already incarcerated for serious crimes received a life sentence Thursday after his violent attack on a correctional officer in March 2024. Elijah Joseph Grant St. Onge, 32, was sentenced to life in prison, with a mandatory minimum of 10 years for aggravated battery. This new sentence will be served consecutively with his existing prison term for previous offenses, which include lewd conduct with a minor and robbery.
The attack occurred at the Idaho Maximum Security Prison, where St. Onge used a handmade weapon to inflict injuries on a correctional officer. The assault, described as unprovoked, led to serious defensive wounds for the officer involved. A jury found St. Onge guilty of aggravated battery in April 2025, and he later acknowledged being a persistent violator under Idaho law, which enabled the court to impose a harsher penalty.
“This incident was a calculated act of violence against an individual simply performing his duties,” said Ada County Prosecutor Jan Bennetts, emphasizing the seriousness of the attack.
