BRADENTON, FL – A fishing trip off Florida’s coast spiraled into a life-threatening ordeal when a man allegedly attempted to murder his wife miles from shore. Douglas Najar, 61, now faces serious charges following the dramatic incident.
The couple set out near Anna Maria Island for what was expected to be a routine fishing excursion. However, tensions mounted as Najar reportedly became agitated with his fishing gear, prompting his wife to enter the water with a pool noodle, hoping to ease the situation.
Authorities allege that Najar abandoned her in the open water, only returning when another boat was nearby. Upon her return to the vessel, Najar is accused of launching a violent assault, striking and stomping on her before attempting to drown her.
In a desperate act of self-preservation, the woman pretended to be dead, leading Najar to briefly drive away. She managed to cling to the boat’s ladder and reboard, enduring further attacks until they eventually returned to land.
Once ashore, the woman swam to safety and alerted the police. She was taken to a hospital with a concussion and extensive bruising. Her quick thinking and resilience were crucial in surviving the ordeal.
Najar has been arrested and charged with attempted first-degree murder and domestic battery. The case remains under investigation as authorities gather more details about the events at sea.
