The clip, which depicts a nighttime explosion in a residential area, was misleadingly captioned to suggest it showed an Iranian missile striking an Israeli city.
The deceptive narrative emerged in a TikTok post dated June 28, 2025, and has since spread across various platforms including Facebook, Instagram, and YouTube in multiple languages, including English and Arabic. The post claimed to show “seconds before Iran’s missile hit Israeli city,” misleading viewers about the origins and context of the footage.
This surge of misinformation comes amid a backdrop of intense military confrontations, where the two nations engaged in significant missile exchanges following Israel’s extensive bombing campaign targeting Iranian nuclear and military sites. These attacks resulted in more than 900 fatalities in Iran and 28 in Israel. A ceasefire was announced on June 24, bringing an end to the violence.
Investigations into the video revealed its true setting, with a reverse image search leading to a higher-quality version posted on ViralHog. The original clip was correctly identified as showing a drone strike by Russian forces on a residential building in Kyiv, filmed on June 9, 2025. The caption provided by ViralHog clearly states the nature of the event depicted in the video.
Further inspection confirmed that the residential complex shown in the circulated video matches an actual building in Kyiv. A real estate company based in Ukraine provided visual evidence that corroborates the location, identifying distinct features visible in both the video and updated images of the building, such as a yellow fence surrounding a nearby park and the style of the entrance door.
The spread of this video not only misrepresent the current geopolitical tensions but also amplifies the spread of false information during volatile times. Disinformation is particularly dangerous in conflict situations, where visuals can easily be manipulated to promote misleading narratives.
