Clinton Township, Michigan — A 33-year-old man is set to face trial for involuntary manslaughter in connection with a deadly industrial fire and subsequent explosions that took place earlier this year. The decision to proceed with the felony charge against Noor Noel Kestou follows a four-day preliminary examination in Macomb County’s 41-B District Court, according to Prosecutor Peter J. Lucido.
Kestou, a Commerce resident, first appeared in court to address the charge in April. The case is now moving to the Macomb County Third Circuit Court for further legal proceedings, with an arraignment scheduled for November 3.
The case stems from a tragic incident on March 4, 2024, when a fire erupted in a building operated by Kestou. Authorities allege that the facility housed thousands of nitrous oxide and butane canisters, which contributed to the destructive explosions that rocked the area. The incident claimed the life of 19-year-old Turner Salter, who was reportedly struck in the head by flying debris while approximately a quarter-mile from the fire.
Prosecutor Lucido emphasized the gravity of the situation, noting that the evidence collected thus far warranted the serious charge. The explosion led to multiple detonations, prompting emergency responders to advise local residents to remain indoors as a precaution. The impact of the blasts scattered debris as far as two miles from the epicenter of the fire.
In addition to the tragic death of Salter, a firefighter sustained injuries in the incident and was subsequently treated at a local hospital. The case has raised concerns about safety regulations and the proper handling of hazardous materials in industrial settings, as community members seek answers regarding the circumstances that led to this devastating event.
