Woman Taking Out Trash Among Two Fatally Stabbed on Long Island

The attacks happened in separate Nassau County locations before sunrise Friday.

ISLAND PARK, N.Y. — Two Nassau County communities were shaken Friday after police said one suspect fatally stabbed two people in separate attacks before being arrested outside a Lynbrook convenience store.

The first killing happened around 12:30 a.m. at a Wendy’s on Austin Boulevard in Island Park, where police said a woman was stabbed while taking out trash. About two and a half hours later, police said another victim was fatally stabbed at a home on West Mineola Avenue in Valley Stream.

Nassau County police said the suspect knew both victims, but they did not immediately explain the relationships or release a possible motive. Authorities also had not released the victims’ names or the suspect’s name by Friday afternoon.

The suspect was later apprehended outside a 7-Eleven in Lynbrook, police said. Investigators were working across three locations: the restaurant, the Valley Stream home and the area where the suspect was taken into custody.

Neighbors near the Valley Stream scene described the area as quiet and close to several local landmarks. Bishop Claude Hibbert, whose church is next to the crime scene, said the taped-off area made clear that police were handling a serious case.

“We’re right near the Village Hall. We’re right near the park, the train station,” area resident Mike Steinke said. “Generally speaking, a quiet part of town.”

Police had not announced charges or a court date by Friday afternoon. The investigation remained active as detectives continued to gather evidence and prepare additional updates.
