Woman Strangled, Robbed During Hollywood Hills Home Invasion

Police said masked suspects fled with cash and jewelry after the attack.

LOS ANGELES — A woman in her 70s was hospitalized after masked suspects entered a Hollywood Hills home Thursday night, strangled her and stole cash and jewelry, Los Angeles police said.

Officers responded around 8 p.m. to a robbery call in the 8500 block of Lookout Mountain Avenue, near Wonderland Elementary School. Police said the suspects had already fled when officers arrived. The victim survived and was taken to a hospital, where she was reported in stable condition.

LAPD Officer Rosario Cervantes said officers found evidence of a violent home invasion after reaching the hillside neighborhood. Investigators said the suspects demanded property from the woman before attacking her. The items taken included jewelry and a large amount of cash. Some reports placed the loss at about $20,000, though police had not released a final total.

Detectives described the suspects as masked men wearing black hoodies. They left the area in a white Honda Accord, according to investigators. Police had not released their names, ages or detailed descriptions by Friday morning. No arrests had been announced, and officials did not say whether the woman knew the people who entered the home.

The robbery drew a large police response to a narrow, dark residential street in the Hollywood Hills. Robbery-homicide detectives were called in overnight as officers searched the area and checked for possible evidence. A nearby resident identified only as Chris told ABC7 that he heard sirens and helicopters and became worried because his own home had been broken into recently.

The attack comes during heightened concern about break-ins across Los Angeles, including in hillside and valley neighborhoods. Last week, Mayor Karen Bass ordered extra police patrols in parts of the San Fernando Valley after a rash of home burglaries. Police have not said whether Thursday’s robbery is linked to any other case.

Investigators were expected to review surveillance video, canvass nearby homes and search for the white sedan. The victim’s full condition, the number of suspects and the exact value of the stolen property remained under investigation Friday.
