Police say a 17-year-old fired the weapon while 18-year-old Ulisses Macareno drove during the shooting that killed Destiney Gonzalez.
BOISE, Idaho — Boise police have arrested two teenagers in connection with a deadly drive-by shooting outside a house party, saying investigators believe a 17-year-old fired the weapon while an 18-year-old drove the vehicle.
The arrests came four days after 22-year-old Destiney Gonzalez of Caldwell was fatally shot early Aug. 30 outside a home in the 3900 block of West Clement Road. Police have said they do not believe Gonzalez was the intended target and that the gunfire appeared to have been directed at the party or one or more people attending it.
Ulisses Macareno, 18, of Meridian, was arrested on a charge of first-degree murder by aiding and abetting. The 17-year-old, whose name has not been released because he is a juvenile, was arrested on a first-degree murder charge. The charges are allegations, and the arrests do not establish guilt.
Police said detectives obtained arrest warrants for both teenagers Thursday. Macareno was arrested at a home in Meridian with assistance from Meridian police and was booked into the Ada County Jail. The younger suspect was arrested at a home in Caldwell with assistance from Caldwell and Nampa police and was booked into the Canyon County Juvenile Detention Center.
Investigators said evidence indicates the 17-year-old fired a weapon during the shooting and Macareno was driving. Police have not publicly described all of the evidence that led detectives to identify the two teenagers or explained what investigators believe led to the shooting.
The shooting was reported shortly before 6 a.m. Aug. 30 at a home that police said was being used as a short-term vacation rental. A party was underway when a sedan-style vehicle passed the residence and multiple shots were fired toward the home, according to investigators.
Officers arriving at the property found Gonzalez on the front porch with a gunshot wound. Boise Fire crews and Ada County paramedics attempted lifesaving measures, but she died. Authorities reported no other injuries. The Ada County Coroner’s Office identified Gonzalez, a Caldwell resident, after the shooting and classified her death as a homicide.
Before the arrests, detectives said a large number of people had been at the party and sought information from witnesses and others who might have photographs or video from the area. Investigators also asked rideshare drivers who had made pickups or drop-offs near the gathering in the hours before the shooting to contact authorities.
Boise Police Chief Chris Dennison credited detectives, other law enforcement agencies and members of the community with helping investigators develop the case. Police said the investigation remains ongoing, leaving unanswered questions about the circumstances surrounding the shooting and whom the gunfire was allegedly intended to target.
