Gunfire reached a nearby home as authorities investigated a shooting that killed one bystander and wounded another.
LOCKPORT TOWNSHIP, Ill. — A fatal shooting that investigators say caught two bystanders in crossfire has unsettled a Lockport Township neighborhood after gunfire also struck a nearby home, leaving residents waiting for answers about who fired the shots and why.
Will County sheriff’s deputies were sent to the 200 block of Dellwood Avenue at about 7:54 p.m. Wednesday after a report of a shooting. Deputies found a 31-year-old woman and an adult man wounded in a driveway. Both were taken to a hospital, where the woman died. The man was expected to recover.
The woman was later identified by the Will County Coroner’s Office as Michelle Robinson, 31. Sheriff’s investigators said their preliminary findings indicated Robinson and the wounded man were standing outside when they were caught in crossfire and were not the intended targets.
The effects of the gunfire extended beyond the two people who were hit. A resident living nearby told local news outlets that a bullet entered her house and struck a wall near where her son had been. The account underscored the wider danger created by the shooting even though authorities reported no other people wounded.
Neighbors who spoke with reporters described hearing a burst of gunfire Wednesday evening before emergency crews and law enforcement officers arrived. One resident said she initially questioned whether the sounds were gunshots. Others described seeing the aftermath as deputies converged on the residential block.
A large law enforcement response continued into the night and following hours. Authorities asked people to stay away from the area while investigators worked at the scene. Video from the neighborhood showed officers and specialized police personnel near the property as detectives gathered information.
The sheriff’s office has released few details about the confrontation that produced the crossfire. Authorities have not said how many people were shooting, what prompted the gunfire or whether any of those involved knew Robinson or the wounded man. No motive has been announced.
The shooting drew particular concern because investigators described the two people who were hit as bystanders. Neighbors remembered Robinson as a mother who was familiar to people in the area. Public reports differed on the number of children she had, and officials had not provided a confirmed number.
The wounded man has not been publicly identified. Authorities initially said he was expected to recover, and CBS Chicago later reported that his family said he had been released from the hospital by Thursday evening. Officials have not disclosed whether investigators have interviewed him about what he saw before or during the shooting.
No arrest or suspect identification had been publicly announced as of Friday. The Will County Sheriff’s Office continued investigating the circumstances surrounding the gunfire, including who exchanged shots and why two people standing outside a home became caught in the line of fire.
