Investigators say surveillance video and license plate readers helped lead authorities to the married suspects at an Illinois hotel.
ST. LOUIS COUNTY, Mo. — A Texas husband and wife have been charged in connection with the fatal shooting of 17-year-old Alyssa Wilson as she drove on Interstate 170 in St. Louis County, authorities said.
St. Louis County Prosecutor Melissa Price-Smith said Willie Herndon, 42, faces charges of first-degree murder and armed criminal action in Wilson’s Oct. 14 death. His wife, Taiya Herndon, 45, is charged with hindering prosecution. Authorities allege she drove Willie Herndon to Illinois after the shooting. The charges are accusations, and the defendants have not been convicted.
Investigators said Wilson was driving south on I-170 when she was shot Wednesday evening. Officers responding to a crash near Midland Boulevard at about 7:20 p.m. found her wounded inside her vehicle. She was taken to a hospital, where she later died. Wilson was a senior at McCluer North High School.
The Major Case Squad of Greater St. Louis said surveillance footage became a key part of the investigation. Authorities said video showed a white SUV stopped along the shoulder of southbound I-170 just south of St. Charles Rock Road. Investigators said Willie Herndon got out of the vehicle and remained outside briefly before a gunshot was heard. He then returned to the SUV, which left the area, according to investigators. Taiya Herndon was also inside the SUV, authorities said.
Investigators have said they found no known relationship between Wilson and the Herndons. Authorities also said the shooting was not believed to have resulted from road rage. A motive has not been publicly established, and investigators have not disclosed why they believe Wilson’s vehicle was targeted.
Police said license plate recognition technology helped investigators identify the SUV and trace it to a hotel in Caseyville, Illinois. Authorities placed the location under surveillance before taking the Herndons into custody. Investigators later executed a search warrant and said they recovered evidence linking the couple to the investigation, including a firearm.
Authorities said Willie Herndon provided investigators with information about his alleged involvement and information that could relate to other ongoing investigations. Officials have not publicly detailed those other cases, and no connection to another incident has been established in the charges announced in Wilson’s death.
Wilson was described by her school as a student-athlete and office aide who planned to attend college after graduating. Her death prompted an intensive investigation that included requests for information from drivers who had been on I-170 around the time of the shooting. The Major Case Squad credited tips from the public with assisting investigators before the arrests.
Willie Herndon was being held on a $1 million cash-only bond, while Taiya Herndon’s bond was set at $500,000 cash only, according to authorities. The couple was arrested in Illinois, and the criminal case in St. Louis County remains pending as investigators continue examining the circumstances surrounding the shooting.
