Nassau County police said the victim was attacked while sleeping in a basement apartment.
MASSAPEQUA, N.Y. — A 22-year-old Massapequa woman was arrested after police said she fatally stabbed a 28-year-old man early Monday inside the Long Island home he shared with his parents.
Nassau County police identified the suspect as Kristin Scully and said she is being charged with second-degree murder. Police said Scully and the victim knew each other and had met at a bar before going to the home near Massapequa High School. The victim’s name had not been released by officials as of Tuesday morning.
Detective Lieutenant George Darienzo said the stabbing happened at about 1:30 a.m. Monday while the man was asleep in a basement apartment. Darienzo said Scully became angry and stabbed the man in the neck. The victim’s parents heard him screaming and rushed downstairs. “No family should ever have to bear witness to their son being killed in that manner,” Darienzo said.
Police said officers responding to the home found Scully hiding inside with a pocketknife. The victim was pronounced dead at the scene. Investigators have not publicly said what led to the violence, and they have not released a full account of what happened after the pair left the bar. Police said the investigation remained active.
The stabbing drew a heavy police response in the residential neighborhood. Neighbors reported helicopters overhead, police dogs searching the area and a street closure that lasted for hours. Several residents said the victim lived with his parents and was known in the community. One neighbor told local reporters the news spread quickly because families on the block recognized the household.
Scully was taken into custody Monday and faces a second-degree murder charge. Court details were not immediately clear Tuesday morning. Police said more information could be released after the next steps in the criminal case, including arraignment and further review by prosecutors.
The case stood Tuesday with one woman in custody, one man dead and Nassau County detectives still working to complete the timeline of the overnight encounter.
