Sheriff John Mina said three deputies fired after the woman threatened them and refused commands to drop the knife.
ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. — Three Orange County deputies fatally shot a woman Wednesday after Sheriff John Mina said she came at them with a large knife outside a home in the Dr. Phillips area.
Deputies were called about 1 p.m. to the 8200 block of Tivoli Drive after reports of a woman screaming in the street, Mina said. The shooting is now under review by the Orange County Sheriff’s Office and state investigators, with body-camera video expected to be released within 30 days.
Mina said deputies found the woman inside a home and knocked on the door. When she opened it, he said, she was holding a large knife. Deputies backed away toward the street and told her several times to drop it. Mina said the woman refused and shouted, “I’ll kill you,” while moving toward the deputies. Three deputies then fired, striking her.
The woman was taken to a hospital, where she was pronounced dead. Officials had not released her name as of Thursday. The sheriff’s office also had not released the names of the deputies involved. Mina said he had reviewed body-camera footage from the encounter and said the agency would release the video within 30 days, following its normal process for critical incidents.
The shooting happened in a residential part of Dr. Phillips, a southwest Orange County community near major roads, homes and shopping areas. The sheriff’s office said the case is a deputy-involved shooting, a category the agency tracks through its public critical incident records. Those records include the date, location, initial call, people involved and later review findings when available.
The Florida Department of Law Enforcement typically reviews deputy-involved shootings, while the sheriff’s office conducts its own administrative review. The State Attorney’s Office also can review whether the shooting was legally justified. Mina did not announce a final finding Wednesday, and officials said the investigation remains open.
Neighbors reported a woman screaming before deputies arrived, according to officials. The call quickly moved from a welfare or disturbance response to a deadly confrontation at the home. Mina said deputies gave repeated commands before firing. No deputies were reported injured.
The case remained under investigation Thursday. The next major public step is expected to be the release of body-camera footage within 30 days.
