Beach Park, Illinois — A 46-year-old man succumbed to his injuries Saturday, days after he was shot multiple times while seated in his car, an incident that authorities believe involved a hired gunman. Cristian N. Ruval-Cavatorres, 28, of Mount Pleasant, Wisconsin, has been arrested in connection with the shooting that left the victim critically injured.
The Lake County Sheriff’s Office was alerted to the shooting early Wednesday morning when the victim arrived at Vista Medical Center East in Waukegan, suffering from life-threatening injuries. According to Deputy Chief Christopher Covelli, the shooting occurred around 5:20 a.m. outside the victim’s residence on North Sheridan Road, as he warmed up his vehicle in preparation for work.
A relative transported the victim to the hospital, where he remained in extremely critical condition until his death on Saturday afternoon. An autopsy is scheduled to determine the exact cause of death; however, the victim’s identity has not yet been publicly released.
Detectives investigating the shooting quickly identified a suspicious vehicle observed in the area the day before. They reviewed surveillance footage and located a car matching the description, confirming it was present nearby at the time of the shooting using license plate reader technology.
Authorities traced the vehicle to Ruval-Cavatorres, who was stopped by Mount Pleasant Police while driving another car. Following a thorough interview, detectives determined that Ruval-Cavatorres was responsible for the shooting and discovered evidence suggesting he had been hired to carry out the attack.
A search warrant executed at his location yielded the firearm believed to have been used in the shooting, as well as a cellphone linked to communications with the person who allegedly hired him. In a subsequent operation, law enforcement arrested the individual who contracted the shooting, bringing additional layers to the investigation.
Ruval-Cavatorres now faces charges including attempted first-degree murder and aggravated battery with a firearm. He is currently being held in Racine County Jail and is awaiting extradition to Lake County, where charges may be elevated following the victim’s death.
Sheriff John D. Idleburg emphasized the community’s need for safety, stating that violence has no place in society. He commended his team’s swift and thorough investigation, which led not only to the arrest of the shooter but also the apprehension of the individual who orchestrated the crime. The Lake County Sheriff’s Office expressed gratitude to the Mount Pleasant Police for their support in the case as the investigation continues.
