State agents are reviewing police gunfire while local detectives investigate a stabbing death.
HIGH POINT, N.C. — State and local investigators are reviewing a deadly Sunday night incident in which a woman was fatally stabbed and a man armed with a knife was shot by police, officials said.
The case began when two juveniles ran from a home in the 4500 block of Jamesford Drive and gave information to a neighbor about an active assault involving a knife. Police said the neighbor called 911. Within minutes, High Point officers reached the home, where the response shifted from a domestic disturbance call to a homicide investigation and an officer-involved shooting review.
Police said officers first knocked at the front door and received no response. At the same time, officers checking the rear of the home saw signs of a violent assault. Officers then forced entry through the front and encountered an adult man covered in blood and armed with a knife. Chief Curtis Cheeks III said the man ignored repeated commands and advanced toward officers. Both officers fired their weapons. The man died at the home despite efforts by officers to provide aid.
Inside the residence, officers found an adult woman suffering from stab wounds. She was pronounced dead shortly afterward. Police have not released either person’s name because the case remains under investigation. Officials also have not released the ages of the adults, the ages of the juveniles or a detailed timeline of what happened before the neighbor called 911. Police said no other suspects were being sought.
The High Point Police Department is handling the homicide investigation into the woman’s death. The North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation is handling the separate review of the police shooting. Four officers connected to the response were placed on paid administrative leave, which police described as standard protocol. Cheeks said no officers were physically hurt during the encounter.
The incident left neighbors shaken in a residential area described as peaceful. One neighbor said the emergency response filled the street after the gunfire. Another said the deaths were “unfortunate” and reflected the hidden danger that can build inside a household. Cheeks said police work with local partners on domestic violence cases, but he did not release any prior call history for the Jamesford Drive home.
Police said Monday that the community faced no continuing threat. The next public update is expected after investigators complete more interviews and the SBI advances its review.
