Violent Domestic Disturbance Leads to Arrest of Man Accused of Assaulting Ex-Girlfriend and Child

Wallace, N.C. — A domestic disturbance at Pondview Apartments led to the arrest of a man accused of assaulting an ex-girlfriend and her child on Sunday. Officers from the Wallace Police Department responded to the report, discovering evidence of forced entry when they arrived on the scene.

The victim, Miniyyah Brannon, reported that Jamar Daeshawn Newkirk had violently entered her apartment, where he physically attacked her. In a troubling escalation, authorities stated that Newkirk also allegedly harmed Brannon’s 11-year-old child by throwing a stroller during the incident, resulting in injuries. Multiple children were reportedly in the apartment at the time of the assault.

Upon searching the area, police found Newkirk hiding nearby. When approached, he resisted arrest and allegedly damaged police property during the confrontation. Despite his attempts to evade capture, officers took him into custody and transported him to the Duplin County Magistrate’s Office.

Newkirk faces several serious charges, including felony breaking and entering with intent to terrorize or injure, felony assault by strangulation, assault on a female, and assault inflicting serious injury in the presence of a minor, among others. He is also charged with assaulting a child under 12, injury to personal property, and resisting a public officer.

At this time, Newkirk remains in custody at the Duplin County Jail without bond. The case has raised concerns about domestic violence, particularly the dangers posed to children in such situations. Authorities are urging anyone experiencing similar circumstances to seek help and report incidents to the police.

Community members expressed shock at the violence within their neighborhood and emphasized the importance of safety for all residents. Local advocacy groups are also beginning to mobilize resources to support victims of domestic abuse in the area.

As the investigation continues, police are piecing together more details while providing support to the victims. The Wallace Police Department has stated their commitment to investigating domestic violence cases thoroughly and ensuring the safety of individuals affected by such incidents.
