Portadown, Northern Ireland – A Lithuanian man with a history of serious criminal offenses has been sentenced to prison after a violent altercation with his partner last year. The incident, which involved a physical attack and resulting serious injury, occurred in a domestic setting in Portadown, highlighting ongoing issues related to alcohol misuse and domestic violence.
Rolandas Latonas, 53, currently residing on Clonavon Avenue, was convicted of grievous bodily harm and criminal damage. He received a three-year sentence during a session at Craigavon Crown Court. According to court documents, half of this sentence will be served in prison, with the remainder on license, reflecting the severity of his actions.
The court learned that on February 12, police were dispatched to a residence in the Abercorn Park neighborhood, following reports of a domestic disturbance. The victim, who had been in a seven-year relationship with Latonas, described an escalation from a verbal altercation to physical violence after both parties had been drinking.
The situation deteriorated when Latonas threw a glass, shattering it on the floor, and subsequently used a shard of glass to inflict a wound on his partner. This attack resulted in a severe, bleeding injury approximately five centimeters long on the right side of her torso. The domestic space was found in significant disarray by responding officers.
Following the incident, the victim required immediate medical attention and received six stitches at Craigavon Area Hospital to close the wound. During the trial, attention was drawn to Latonas’s extensive criminal background, both locally and in his native Lithuania. His record includes convictions for theft, fraud, robbery, possession of a firearm, and serious drug offenses.
In his defense, Latonas’s lawyer conveyed his client’s acknowledgment of the toxic nature of their relationship, exacerbated by frequent excessive drinking. However, he noted that this does not excuse his violent behavior.
The judge imposed a five-year restraining order against Latonas in addition to his custodial sentence, aiming to protect the victim from future harm.
This case adds to the concerning statistics on domestic violence in Northern Ireland, prompting calls from community leaders and activists for more robust intervention and support systems for those affected by similar domestic issues. The inclusion of alcohol in many such incidents points to a broader societal issue that requires comprehensive community and governmental action to address effectively.
The sentencing of Latonas serves as a reminder of the critical need for continuous efforts to combat domestic violence and supports the ongoing discussion about the best approaches to dealing with offenders and supporting victims in the aftermath of such crimes.
