BINGHAMTON, N.Y. — A 30-year-old man has admitted to charges of attempted rape and illegal possession of a weapon in Broome County Court, a case that underscores ongoing concerns about violence and illegal firearms in the community. Karl Calhoun faces a significant prison sentence of 10 years for the attempted rape and an additional seven years for possessing a firearm unlawfully.
The assault occurred on August 24 when Calhoun attacked an acquaintance at a residence in Vestal. During the violent incident, he struck the victim multiple times, strangled her, and forcibly removed her clothing. The victim managed to escape to safety, highlighting her resilience amidst a terrifying ordeal.
Surveillance footage captured the assault, aiding law enforcement in their rapid response. Following the attack, investigators from the Vestal Police Department launched an immediate inquiry, leading to crucial evidence that would later support the charges against Calhoun.
