Authorities are working to identify the men and determine what happened inside the Downey Street residence before officers arrived.
HOUSTON, Texas — A neighbor’s report of a foul odor from a north Houston home led police to two men found dead inside Monday evening, beginning an investigation that has left key questions about their identities and deaths unanswered.
Houston police said officers were sent to 11617 Downey Street about 5:15 p.m. Sept. 14 for a report of a person down. The call followed a neighbor’s report of an odor coming from the residence. Officers located two unresponsive men, and Houston Fire Department paramedics pronounced them dead at the scene.
The discovery followed a period in which people associated with the house had apparently not been seen by neighbors. ABC13 reported that police said it appeared three brothers owned the residence and that neighbors told investigators they had not seen any of them for about a week. Authorities have not confirmed that the two dead men were the owners or residents.
That uncertainty has become one of the central questions in the case. The Houston Police Department’s official statement did not release the men’s names or describe their relationship to each other. Their identities are pending verification by the Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences.
Police also have not determined publicly how the men died. ABC13 reported that investigators saw no obvious signs of trauma, but police considered the circumstances suspicious because the men were found together. An autopsy will be used to determine each man’s cause of death.
Officers forced entry into the residence after responding to the neighbor’s report, a homicide detective told ABC13. Authorities have not released details about conditions inside the home beyond the discovery of the two men, and they have not announced evidence showing that a crime occurred.
The case illustrates the limits of what investigators could confirm in the first days after the discovery. Police know when officers were called and where the men were found, but officials have not announced when the deaths occurred, who was last in contact with the men or whether anyone else had recently been inside the residence.
No arrest has been announced, and police have not identified a suspect or released a possible motive. The department’s official update said the investigation remains dependent on the medical findings that will establish the causes of death.
HPD Homicide Division detectives G. Herrera and R. Barcak are investigating. The Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences had not publicly verified the men’s identities or causes of death in the information released as of Wednesday.
