The 14-year-old suffered injuries that police said were not life-threatening after a single shot was fired Monday night.
RALEIGH, N.C. — A 14-year-old girl was taken to a hospital after being struck by a single gunshot inside a northeast Raleigh apartment, an incident police said occurred while a 19-year-old man was handling a firearm.
The shooting happened around 10 p.m. in the 4800 block of Neuse Vista Way, off Capital Boulevard. Raleigh police said the teenager’s injuries were not considered life-threatening. The CBS 17 report identified the girl as the younger sister of the man later charged in the case.
Police identified the man as Jayshawn Antonio Jones, 19. Investigators said Jones was “manipulating” a firearm inside the apartment when it discharged once and struck the teenager. Authorities have not released a fuller account of what caused the weapon to fire.
Jones was charged with assault with a deadly weapon and discharging a firearm within city limits. The charges are allegations, and police have not said that investigators believe Jones deliberately fired at the teenager.
Emergency radio traffic reported by WRAL indicated that medical crews were responding to a gunshot wound to the shoulder. That radio traffic offered an early description from the scene, but Raleigh police did not release detailed medical information about the teenager’s injury.
Officials have not publicly identified the 14-year-old. No information was released about how long she remained at the hospital, and authorities had not announced any change in her condition after describing the injury as non-life-threatening.
Several details about the shooting remain unclear. Police have not said who owned the firearm, whether it was loaded before Jones began handling it, where inside the apartment the shooting occurred or whether other people witnessed the gun discharge.
The investigation centers on the circumstances surrounding the single shot inside the residence. Police have not announced additional suspects or charges, and available reports do not describe any continuing threat to residents of the apartment complex.
Raleigh police said the case remains under investigation. Authorities had not released additional findings about the firearm or the circumstances leading to the shooting as of Wednesday.
