COLDWATER, Miss. — An Independence High School community is mourning 17-year-old student and varsity basketball player Kentavious Doyle after he was fatally shot over the weekend in neighboring Panola County.
Doyle, a senior at the Tate County school, was shot Saturday afternoon, Sept. 12, at the Jimmy Jones Trailer Park off Highway 51 near Como, authorities said. He was taken to a hospital in Senatobia, where he was pronounced dead. The Panola County Sheriff’s Office is investigating, and no arrests had been announced in the latest reports.
As investigators work to determine what happened, the teenager’s death has also become a loss felt across his school community. Independence High School said teachers and coaches who knew Doyle remembered him as sweet, respectful and playful and described him as someone whose personality regularly brought smiles to those around him.
Doyle played on the Independence varsity boys basketball team. The program finished the 2025-26 season with a 23-8 record and reached the Mississippi High School Activities Association Class 3A playoffs, according to the Clarion Ledger. His death came as the school was beginning another academic year with Doyle expected to complete his senior year.
The school’s tribute said Doyle’s presence would be missed in classrooms, hallways and the locker room. The statement focused on the teenager as a student and teammate rather than on the still-unresolved circumstances of his death.
Support also came from elsewhere in Tate County. Strayhorn High School posted a message expressing sympathy to Doyle’s family, friends and loved ones and said the broader school community stood with Independence High School following the loss.
Doyle’s father, Bobby Doyle, said his son had aspirations beyond high school. He described Kentavious as both a basketball player and an artist and said the teenager was looking toward graduation and his future.
The father said Kentavious had gone to pick up his younger sister at one of the mobile homes near Como when the shooting occurred. Panola County Sheriff Shane Phelps has not publicly said what led to the shooting. Authorities said Doyle was struck once in his side.
Phelps has described the investigation as active. Officials have not publicly identified a suspect or announced a motive, and no one had been charged in connection with Doyle’s death in the latest available reports.
For classmates, teachers and coaches, the investigation is unfolding alongside the immediate task of mourning a student they expected to see throughout his senior year. The school has emphasized the personality and relationships Doyle leaves behind while law enforcement continues trying to establish the circumstances of his death.
The Panola County Sheriff’s Office has not announced an arrest or released additional findings about what happened before the shooting. The case remains under investigation.
